What to Wear for Family Photos in Ocean County, NJ: A Guide to Relaxed, Natural Family Sessions
Choosing what to wear for family photos doesn't have to be stressful! My biggest advice is to keep things comfortable, coordinate colors instead of matching everyone exactly, and choose outfits that represent your family’s individual personality. The goal is to capture the love, connection, and personalities that make your family yours.
If you're planning family photos in Ocean County, NJ, here are my favorite tips to help you choose outfits.
Moms, Choose Your Outfit First!
As moms, we're often so busy taking care of everyone else that we put ourselves last. I see families choose outfits for the kids, find something for Dad, and then Mom is left scrambling at the last minute to find something.
Let's flip that around!
Choose an outfit that fits you well, feels comfortable, and makes you feel confident. Once you've found something you feel great wearing, coordinate the rest of your family's outfits around yours.
Choose something that feels like you. When you're comfortable and confident, it's much easier to relax and enjoy the experience.
Coordinate Colors Instead of Matching Everyone
Remember those family photos where everyone wore the exact same white shirt and jeans?
Coordinating colors and patterns look better than 100% matchy matchy outfits. Choose colors and patterns that look good together while giving each family member the freedom to wear something that feels like them.
Choose a color palette and pick outfits that work within that palette. Pick different shades of the same color. Mix and match patterns and solids. Think one pattern for every two solids.
Choose Clothes You Can Move and Play In
I want your family to have fun, interact, and enjoy being together. That means your clothing needs to work for the experience!
Choose outfits that allow you to sit on the ground, walk, bend down, hug your kids, and move around comfortably. Look for clothing that stays in place when you move so you aren't spending the entire session adjusting your top, pulling down a dress, or worrying about how your clothes look.
When it comes to dressing the kids, choose clothing they're comfortable wearing. We may be sitting on the ground, playing, or getting a little dirty, so leave the expensive designer outfit at home if you'd be upset about a grass stain.
Some of the sweetest family moments happen when everyone forgets about the camera for a little while. Comfortable clothing helps make those moments possible.
Dress for Your Location and Choose Comfortable Shoes
When you're planning family photos in Ocean County, NJ, consider the setting when putting your outfits together. Your clothing doesn't need to match the location perfectly, but it should make sense for where we'll be spending our time.
Your location should help guide your outfit choices, especially when it comes to footwear. If we're photographing your family at the beach, sandals or flip-flops might be perfect. If we're heading to a farm or walking along a trail, boots or other sturdy, comfortable shoes are a much better choice.
Think about the ground we'll be walking on, the activities your kids might enjoy, and whether you'll need to move around quite a bit. You don't want sore feet or uncomfortable shoes distracting you from the experience.
What Should You Avoid Wearing for Family Photos?
A few things are best left out of your family's outfits. Large logos and graphics can be visually distracting and draw attention away from your faces and the connections between you. Baseball caps and sunglasses can also hide your faces, making it harder to see the expressions and emotions that make your photos meaningful.
